As the old saying goes, beauty is only skin-deep. And modern-day cosmetics industry watchers tend to agree. Skin care is the most rapidly growing segment of the cosmetics business. And despite sullen global economy, those seeking eternal youth are giving the luxury skin care market a new lease on life. Susan Lesovic reports.
Don't hate her because she's beautiful. She may be shelling out big bucks for that flless complexion. Skin care costs are skyrocketing, and women and men around the globe of dropping upwards to150dollars for mere ounces of face cream.

Companies justify high price tags by claiming that they use rare ingredients. A rocket scientist invented Estee Lauder's La Mer, by fomenting mineral water and sea kelp.
We get asked why it costs 165 dollars for a two-ounce jar of cream. They want to know why it's so expensive. And the answer would be because it's still a hand-made product. Takes 3 to 4 months to process the ingredients that go in to make the cream.
Kristen Petrovich, co-founder of newcomer Sjal skin care, says rather than spending money on advertising, her company funnels revenue into buying up some of the world's rarest ingredients, accounting for the cream's 195-dollar price tag.
We use between 45 to 50 active ingredients per product. We source from around the world, often times there ily one place in the world where we'll get our ingredients. Absolutely, all of our money pretty much goes into the cream. If the cream doesn't work, it doesn't matter how great the packaging looks.
Worldwide, the cosmetics, fragrance, and toiletry industry is a 170-billion-dollar business. Skin care alone accounts to about 30 billion dollars. Most of those sales are within the mass market. And high-end cosmetics account for about 5% of sales. Linda Bolton Weiser, at Fahnestock Co.,tracts the industry.

In terms of prestige cosmetics, the largest market is the United States, with the second largest market being Japan. And over the last couple of years, prestige cosmetics has actually grown the fastest in the UK, with the second highest growth rate being in the US.
Sundari, co-founded by model Christy Turlington, is a skin care line based on the Indian philosophy of Irebada. It's attracted consumers in seven countries, and its top-selling nighttime nourishing oil sells for 125 dollars. So while the uncertain economy has consumers sacrificing in certain areas, that's not the case when it comes to saving face.
