American Airlines Reorganization

American Airlines, the world’s largest airline, today announced plans to cut another 7,000 jobs, retire aircraft, and cut back on flights as part of massive reorganization. This is the latest sign of the financial problems facing the airline industry since the September 11 attacks. Earlier this week, the nation’s seventh largest airline, U.S. Airways, filed for bankruptcy. Time O’Brien has the report.

O’Brien
American Airlines lost almost half a billion dollars in the second quarter of this year alone. To turn around such losses, some 7,000 of around 100,000 employees will go. The number of flights will be reduced, and smaller planes will be grounded to make the remaining flights more profitable.

Tim Doke, Spokesman, American Airlines
We have way too many airline seats chasing way too few customers. So there’s been a lot languishing about, you know, too much capacity in the industry and too much capacity in the industry. And finally, today we’re announcing that we’re doing something about that.

O’Brien
Company officials predict the moves will save about $1.1 billion a year. Cutting costs is what it’s all about. Analysts say United Airlines could be next to declare bankruptcy. United CEO Jack Creighton told employees, who own a majority stake in the company, he was told by Washington policymakers they had to do more to cut costs.

Jack Creighton, CEO, United Airlines
We need more participation from all of our stakeholders in our cost cutting efforts. They have indicated to us that participation must be broader, deeper and longer.

O’Brien
United and American both lost two of its planes in 9.11, and American had to lay off 20,000 employees in its aftermath. But industry spokesmen say what’s crushing the major carriers is the weak economy.

David Swierenga, Air Transport Association
Corporate profits, although they’re beginning to recover, are still below where they were in 2000. And that’s put a clamp on travel budgets. And so the business traveler just hasn’t returned.

O’Brien
Swierenga says more airline bankruptcies are virtually certain if the economy continues to stall.

(on camera)
And it’s no just the economy. In the months after Labor Day, air travel traditionally falls off significantly. So the stormy weather confronting the airline industry could get worse before it gets better.
