a mixed blessing

喜忧参半的事

Working in a big city is a mixed blessing. It is so convenient and comfortable there, but noise pollution and traffic congestion are two big headaches.
在大城市里工作是喜忧参半的事,虽然很舒服和方便,不过噪音污染和交通堵塞却是两大头痛之事。

Jeff: Anyway, Mormons got harassed by outsiders because of this. Utah was all Mormon, except for the Indians, and the U.S. wouldn't make it a state because of polygamy. So finally the Church decided to change the rules around 1890. But some people refused to change.
Jun: So there are still polygamous Mormons around?
Jeff: They aren't part of the mainstream Church any more, but some have formed smaller cults. They say they are the only true Mormons left.
Jun: That's crazy! So what happened to you?

★ outsider (n.) 外人
★ mainstream (a.) 主流的
★ cult (n.) 教派

A new kind of operation has become possible. Doctors take out part of the human body and replace it with artificial parts. Teeth are replaced with silver or gold, and blood vessels are replaced with plastic tubing. These artificial parts work almost as well as the real ones. People live longer and more comfortable lives thanks to this medical advance.

一种新的外科手术变成可能。医生把人体的一部分摘除,用人造器官替换。牙齿用银或金替换,血管用塑料管替换。这些人工器官几乎和真的器官一样工作。全靠这些医学的进步,人们才得以活的更长寿更舒适。

You've done a fantastic job.

对话
Gordon: I've just been reading through your last project report.
James: I hope you didn't find too much wrong with it.
Gordon: On the contrary, you've done a fantastic job.
James: Well I'm not sure about that.
Gordon: You're too modest. It's really well organized and written and offers some very well thought out conclusions.
James: Well I'm glad you like it and hope it proves useful.

戈登:我刚刚读了你最新的计划报告。
詹姆斯:希望你不会觉得太差吧。
戈登:刚好相反,你这报告做得好极了。
詹姆斯:嗯,我可不敢这样肯定。
戈登:你太谦虚了。报告的结构、行文都很好,提出的结论也颇具巧思。
詹姆斯:你喜欢就好了,希望有用吧。

Prove一字,读者大概都知道解作‘证明’,Can you prove what you have said?即‘你能证明你所说的话么?’这个prove是及物动词(transitive verb),其后须有受词(object)。但I hope it proves useful这一句的prove,却不可解作‘证明’,也不是及物动词,而是和is、appear、seem等一样的连系动词(linking verb),即其后可用形容词/形容词词组(adjective phrase)或名词/名词词组(noun phrase),以修饰句子主词(subject)。这个prove有‘是’或‘最后发觉是’的意思,例如:(1) His guess proved (to be) correct(他的猜测并没有错)。(2) Her husband proved (to be) a coward(他丈夫原来是个懦夫)。这两句的proved假如改为was proved,意思就不同了:一是说‘他的猜测是有证据的,证明他没有错’,一是说‘她丈夫被证明是个懦夫’。作连系动词的prove十分常见,不可不识。要称赞人家的工作,你可以像戈登一样说:You have done a fantastic/great/good job。Fantasy是‘幻想’,所以fantastic本是指‘荒诞的’,例如Fantastic stories是‘荒诞的故事’。但口语往往以fantastic解作‘极好的’,例如:He'll go with us? Fantastic!(他会和我们一起去?好极了!)此外,你还可以说Well done!/Great work!/You've done very well!(做得好!)要称赞人家工作进展良好,则可说Nice going!/Good going!/Not bad going!例如:"I've prepared all the legal documents." "Good going!"(‘我已准备了所有法律文件。’ ‘好得很!’)
